My "Ocean Racing" series of fine wood yacht sculptures are underway for 2002.
This series of yacht carvings depicts modern ocean racers doing what they do best ... racing!! Each yacht's clean simple lines tells a story of adventure and passion for the wind-swept great oceans.
The yachts in the series stand between 600mm (2 feet) and 1200mm (4 feet) tall. Each is carved from Australian Red Mahogany by default ... or other timbers by request. (Two yachts to date have been ordered in Australian Red Cedar, one in African Teak and one in Surian Red Cedar.)
The standard finish consists of a series of clear polyurethanes and Tung oil followed up with a low sheen wax. Other available finishes include satin and gloss sprayed varnishes as well as a hard gloss wax.
Each sculpture free-stands on it's own waterline plane. The rig can be rotated through about 30 degrees to create a range of different sailing display scenarios. For example, two or three yachts could be displayed together on different tacks in a match-racing pose.
This will be a limited series of sculptures. Several have already been finished and sold. Several more are currently in the order line.
